Chinese New Year Ceremony in the Chinese Camp
Welcome the Chinese New Year of the Dog with lions, drums and a traditional Chinese ceremony in the Chinese Temple.

Chinese Camp Tour
Visit the Chinese Camp and find out how Chinese people lived during the gold rush.

Hands-On Activities for Kids
Welcome in Chinese New Year by getting hands-on with these great activities for kids!
• Create your own Chinese paper rooster
• Have your name written in Chinese characters
• Wish others good fortune for the Year of the Dog by making a lucky money envelope
• Watch a professional Chinese artist at work.

Anti-Chinese League
Why were some people determined to stop Chinese immigration in the 1850s? Come to a theatre performance recreating a public meeting to ban Chinese people from the Ballarat goldfields and hear an 1850s debate about racism.

Chinese Dragon and Lion Parade
To welcome in Chinese New Year, the Chinese dragon, Xin Long, and Chinese lions will dance up the Main Street of Sovereign Hill.

Please note: This activity is weather dependent and will be cancelled if it is too hot or if it rains.

 

Chinese Performances
Discover the importance of the Chinese Year of the Dog and enjoy colourful performances of ribbon dancing, Tai Chi, fan dancing, and other traditional Chinese entertainment.

Re-awakening the Dragon
Re-Awakening the Dragon exhibition showcases the museum’s extensive Chinese processional and temple collections for the first time. Get up close with colourful costumes, exquisite silk textiles and Loong, the oldest Chinese dragon in Australia.
