Celebrating Chinese New Year - The Year of the Monkey

Every Sunday in February 2016

To celebrate Chinese New Year, Sovereign Hill and the Chinese Australian Cultural Society Ballarat are offering Chinese cultural performances and ‘hands-on’ activities throughout the day.

Your Sovereign Hill admission ticket is valid for any two days of the festival period. Simply validate your ticket during your first visit, either at the Entrance Building or the Post Office (Map 16) on Main Street.

Chinese Camp Tour
Visit the Chinese Camp and find out how our Chinese diggers lived during the gold rushes.
For Guided Tour times, see the blackboard in the Victoria Theatre (Map 26) or Chinese Camp (Map 5).

Hands-On’ Activities
Welcome in Chinese New Year by getting ‘hands-on’ with these great activities for children! Create your own Chinese paper monkey, have your name written in Chinese characters, wish others good fortune for the Year of the Monkey by making a lucky money envelope, listen to Chinese stories or try Chinese paper cutting. If you’d like a bit more colour, make a Chinese opera mask or dress up in typical 1850s Chinese clothes.

Anti-Chinese League
Why were some people determined to stop Chinese immigration in the 1850s? Come to a theatre performance which re-creates a public meeting to ban Chinese people from the Ballarat goldfields and hear an 1850s debate about racism.

Welcome the Chinese New Year
To celebrate Chinese New Year, Sovereign Hill and the Chinese Australian Cultural Society Ballarat are offering visitors the opportunity to participate in a traditional Chinese New Year celebration at the Temple in our Chinese Camp.
Welcome the Chinese New Year of the Monkey with lions, drums and a traditional ceremony.
